The MEDEA System: Technology adoption and development

The architecture under the Life-MEDEA Project, consists of three systems areas that will enable all-parties (Doctors, Clinicians, Meteo/Air Quality Scientists, and Patients) interoperation while each participating entity will be able to work or being informed with specific data models, policies and protocols for the processing, protection and control of personal and medical data of the Patients.

1.The Central Platform

The core of this EU Project is the MEDena® Platform. This is a unique set of modern systems and technologies developed by E.n.A Consulting in the cloud, providing high-availability, high processing power, as well as strong network and data security.

The Platform has been developed under the smart “IoT” standards and is capable to process centrally all the collected data with respect to the provided data models and to inform Project Scientists and Patient with multiple alarm notifications when a Desert Dust Storm (DDS) is forecasted to approach a specific group of Patients.

The MEDena® Platform, will be deployed on Microsoft AZURE Systems in West-Europe installations, which is accredited with all the certifications required by the EU Programme Framework. All our central Systems enable secure exchange, processing and storage of personal and medical data of the monitored patients, using Privacy-by-design (GDPR principles) by the employment of cryptography and other security protocols and technologies supporting the requirements of the European, legal and operational standards, for cross-border data exchange and patient privacy protection.

2.The Main Portal for Clinicians, Doctors and Patients

The Platform, will be utilized by Doctors, Clinicians, Air Quality and Meteo scientists over the ‘Main Web Portal’ interface and the Patients with the use of wearable devices and smartphone applications.

The Main Web Portal, will be acting as an interface between the MEDena® platform and the Scientists to collect, process and provide reporting for Patients data, while it will also allow Meteo and Air Quality Scientists to feed the Platform with the data required to trigger an alarm when a DDS event is approaching.

3.Wearable and Personal Devices

There are thousands of devices on the healthcare wearable market which could assist us collect medical data from our Patients.

Identifying the right healthcare wearable was a struggle for us; the international wearable marketplace has so many devices whilst there are many technological problems (e.g. the devices require constant attention or need to be charged constantly; Bluetooth connections unpair randomly and synchronization might be a nightmare, etc.) which makes it very hard to choose the right one.

So, we went a very long path of paper work, interacting with the manufacturers and sample testing prior to come up with the final wearable devices that successfully have been passed the tests in our lab.

The proposed Wristband/Smartwatch meeting our criteria is enabled with:

  1. Quad core CPU, 1.3GHz with Android OS and capacitive touch display
  2. BT 4.0, GSM, WCDMA and Wi-Fi communication interfaces
  3. Clock, alarm and multi-notification functionality
  4. Ability to run any android custom software apps
  5. Medical sensors for: PPG Real Time Heart Rate Monitoring (in a later stage will be added also, Blood pressure, SPO2, Body Temperature and ECG sensors)
  6. 3D Accelerometer/Gyroscope
  7. GPS
